📊 Women in Digital: What the Latest WiD Index Reveals
How close are we to achieving gender equality in Europe’s digital economy? The latest Women in Digital (WiD) Index offers a clear data-driven answer.
Developed by the WIDCON consortium, the WiD Index tracks women’s participation across the full digital pipeline, from education to leadership. Covering 27 EU Member States and four global benchmark countries, it provides a snapshot of where progress is being made.
The WiD Index follows women’s journey through five interconnected phases: STEM education, ICT education, digital careers, leadership, and the enabling environment.
Each phase of the digital pipeline contributes to a country’s final score, with the Digital (early-to-mid-career) phase carrying the greatest weight (35%), reflecting its importance for retention and career growth.
The Index assesses:
girls’ performance and participation in STEM,
women’s access to ICT education and training,
employment, pay, and upskilling in digital roles,
representation in leadership positions, and
wider structural factors such as digital skills, employment conditions, and national gender equality policies.
The EU average score stands at 51.7, but national performance varies widely. At the top of the ranking, Sweden leads with a score of 76.2, followed by Estonia and Ireland (both 68.0), Finland (64.8), and Latvia (57.4).

Women in Digital Country Ranking
These countries show strong performance across multiple phases of the pipeline, particularly in digital employment and enabling conditions. At the lower end of the scale are Malta, Slovakia, Hungary, and Italy, while Brazil records the lowest overall score among the benchmarked countries.
Progress is possible, but it must be systemic and sustained. Supporting women in the digital economy requires action at every stage: from education and training to workplace policies and leadership pathways.
